Sony DRU-500A To Support 4x DVD+R Writing Speeds With Free Firmware Upgrade

I had heard rumors of this, but I was unable to confirm it until now. According to an announcement on Sony's website, there will be a free firmware update available in December that will give the DRU-500A the ability to write to DVD+R media at 4x.

Thank you for your interest in the free firmware upgrade for Sony Dual RW drive models DRU-500A and DRX-500UL. This new firmware will allow your Dual RW drive to record at 4X on 4X compatible DVD+R media as well as improve the DVD-ROM reading performance with DVD recordable/rewritable media.

We expect this firmware to be released on or before December 9th, 2002. Please check back on this site then to download and install the firmware. We anticipate that 4X compatible DVD+R media will be commercially available later in December.
It's good to see that Sony is continuing to update their drive. With this firmware update the DRU-500A will be on the same playing field as the NEC ND-1100A when it finally ships.
