Microsoft Moves to Own DVD Format

There are plenty of people who think that the MPAA is bad but, as the phrase goes, they ain't seen nuthin' yet. Microsoft had been floating around on the horizon off the California coastline watching Hollywood with interest. Now they have parked a whacking great big battleship just offshore. It has announced its own DVD format and has backing from some insiders in a move to make Media Player the new standard in DVD playback.

Artisan Home Entertainment is going to be releasing the first wave of Microsoft's bid to control Hollywood. It has two films lined up for special treatment, the first is "Shadows of Motown" and the second is a new release of "Terminator 2: Judgement Day." What makes these releases worth mentioning is the fact that both movies include an extra DVD-ROM disc -- a disc that can only be played on PC using Microsoft' Media Player 9.

This would all be just fine unless Microsoft had named the disc HD-DVD. The Microsoft Media Player 9 -based "HD-DVD" is not an HD-DVD format approved by the DVD Forum. Microsoft just think it's an appealing name. The video resolution is nowhere near HDTV-level.

The big selling point is that the Media Player 9 disks are higher resolution. And, wait for the slight of hand, the format is called HD-DVD even though Microsoft is stressing that the resolution is far below "high definition" in the sense of HDTV.

The new format has not been approved by the DVD Forum and may never be. It's not like Microsoft to care if it gets approval anyway. It has spotted a nice fat revenue stream and wants to put up a dam on it so that everyone has to pay them if they want to keep on drinking.

So, give it a four or five years and you'll be able to look back on the era of the MPAA with affection. There's a new player in town and it makes them look very easy going in comparison. The only hope is that Blu-Ray might manage to stop Microsoft from slowly taking over yet another part of everyone's lives.

Hi cool,
ich bin sehr enttäuscht über deine Fähigkeiten der Recherche. Zum Einen vermisse ich die Quellen-Angabe, die hätte mich schon interessiert. Zum Zweiten ist die Überschrift sowie der Text-Ausschnitt irreführend, denn es geht MS gar nicht um ein eigenes DVD-Format, sondern nur um die Komprimierung, die sie gern in einen zukünftigen DVD-Standard verankern möchten.

wenn sich die ms kompression durchsetz dann gibts bei mir wieder super8. gibts eigentlich noch die filmverleihe wie früher??
dpl 2 geht mit den magnetspuren auch da kann mir ms egal sein und auch tcpa

Im übrigen ist das ein ganz durchsichtiger Versuch, wieder mal eigene Standard´s durchzusetzen. Am Ende wollen die auch noch Lizenzgebühren dafür haben ....

O.K. Ich hätte die Bemerkung auch hier stehen lassen sollen.
Das ganze Gelaber ist ins Allgemeines und was Ihr wollt verschoben worden.
Da ist keine einzige Antwort gelöscht, oder geändert worden.

Hier habe ICH alles was nicht zum Thema gehört gelöscht.
Und ich behalte mir vor dies auch in Zukunft mit Threads in Fachforen zu tun.
